Frequently Asked Questions
Got a burning question or something you are curious about? We've got the answers you need! Take a look through some of the questions we get on a regular basis, and feel free to reach out if you want to learn more.
How do you prevent my patio from shifting or sinking over time?
The secret to a lifetime patio is the "sub-base." Most DIY or low-budget installs fail because the ground isn't excavated deep enough. We remove the organic topsoil and replace it with 6 to 8 inches of crushed, angular aggregate, which we compact in 2-inch "lifts" using industrial vibratory plates. This creates a solid, well-draining foundation that resists the vertical pressure of Ontario’s freeze-thaw cycles.
What is the difference between Natural Stone and Interlocking Pavers?
Natural stone (like Flagstone or Bluestone) offers a timeless, organic look where every piece is unique, but it can be more labor-intensive to install. Interlocking pavers are manufactured to high-strength specifications and offer "dimensional consistency," meaning they fit together perfectly. Pavers are often more resistant to de-icing salts and are engineered to handle heavy loads, making them ideal for driveways and high-traffic pool decks.
Do I need to worry about weeds growing between the stones?
We use Polymeric Sand to lock your stones in place. Unlike regular sand, this material contains a binder that hardens when misted with water. It creates a flexible, durable joint that prevents weed seeds from taking root and stops ants from tunneling underneath your pavers. As long as the sand is maintained, your patio should remain virtually weed-free.
How do you handle water drainage around a new retaining wall?
Hydrostatic pressure (water buildup behind the wall) is the #1 cause of wall failure. We install a "clear stone" backfill zone and a perforated "weeping tile" pipe at the base of every retaining wall we build. This allows water to flow down and out through "weep holes," preventing the weight of wet soil from pushing your wall forward during the spring melt.
Can you match the new hardscape to my existing home exterior?
Absolutely. During our design phase, we bring physical samples of various stones and pavers to your home. We look at your brick color, siding texture, and even your roof shingles to find a "complementary" or "contrasting" palette. Our goal is to make the new patio or walkway look like it was an original part of the home's architecture, not an afterthought.
Will my patio be slippery when it rains or snows?
Safety is our priority. Most modern pavers are manufactured with a textured "non-slip" surface specifically designed for outdoor use. For natural stone, we recommend finishes like "thermal" or "sandblasted," which provide excellent traction even when wet. If we are building around a pool, we will guide you toward materials that stay cool under the sun and remain "grippy" for bare feet.
