How often should my garden be serviced?
For most residential properties in Ontario, we recommend bi-weekly or weekly visits during the peak growing season (May through September). This frequency allows us to stay ahead of fast-growing weeds, deadhead perennials to encourage more blooms, and monitor for pests like Japanese Beetles or Aphids before they cause significant damage.
What is the best time of year for a "Spring Clean-Up"?
In Ontario, the window typically opens in late March or April, once the snow has fully melted and the ground is dry enough to walk on without compacting the soil. Our spring service focuses on removing "winter salt" residue, raking out matted leaves, and applying a fresh layer of mulch to lock in spring moisture before the summer heat arrives.
Do you use mulch, and why is it important?
Yes, mulching is a cornerstone of our maintenance program. We primarily use high-quality organic cedar or shredded hardwood mulch. In our climate, mulch serves three critical roles:
- Moisture Retention: It prevents soil from baking dry during humid July heatwaves.
- Weed Suppression: It blocks sunlight from reaching weed seeds.
- Winter Protection: It acts as an insulator for root systems against our harsh "deep freeze" cycles.
How do you handle garden pests and diseases?
We follow Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles. This means we prioritize health first—proper pruning and soil nutrition—to help plants defend themselves naturally. If an intervention is needed, we use Ministry-approved, eco-friendly treatments. Our team is trained to spot early signs of common Ontario issues like Powdery Mildew, Boxwood Blight, or Emerald Ash Borer.
When should I prune my shrubs and hedges?
Timing is everything. For spring-flowering shrubs (like Lilacs or Forsythia), we prune immediately after they bloom so we don't cut off next year's buds. For evergreen hedges (like Cedars), we typically prune in late June once the first flush of new growth has hardened off. Pruning too late in the fall can be risky, as new growth may not have time to "harden" before the first frost.
What is "Deadheading," and do I really need it?
Deadheading is the process of removing faded or spent flowers. Many popular Ontario perennials, such as Daylilies, Coneflowers, and Roses, will stop producing new buds if they begin to "set seed." By removing the old blooms, we trick the plant into thinking it hasn't reproduced yet, resulting in a much longer flowering season and a tidier-looking garden.
