Frequently Asked Questions

Got a burning question or something you are curious about? We've got the answers you need! Take a look through some of the questions we get on a regular basis, and feel free to reach out if you want to learn more.

Do I need a building permit for my deck or patio?

In most Ontario municipalities, any deck attached to the house or more than 24 inches above grade requires a permit. Ground-level patios typically do not. We handle the entire application process with your local building department to ensure your project is 100% legal.

How long does a typical deck and patio project take?

Most integrated projects take between 2 to 4 weeks once construction begins, depending on the complexity and weather. We provide a firm timeline before we break ground so you know exactly when you can start planning your first barbecue.

What is the better investment: a deck or a patio?

It depends on your lot! Decks are ideal for sloping yards or houses with raised main floors. Patios are incredibly durable and offer a lower "long-term" maintenance cost. Often, a combination of both—a smaller deck for grilling that leads down to a large patio for dining—provides the best ROI and functionality.

How do you handle drainage around a new patio?

This is a huge priority in Ontario due to our heavy snowmelt. We always grade patios with a minimum 2% slope away from your home’s foundation. If your yard has a natural dip, we can install "French drains" or "catch basins" beneath the hardscape to divert water safely to a lower point on your property or a dry well.

Can you build a deck or patio in the winter?

While we do most of our construction from April through December, some deck framing can be done in the winter if the footings were poured before the ground froze. However, for patios and stonework, we require unfrozen ground to ensure proper soil compaction. If the base isn't perfectly compacted, your patio will settle unevenly once the spring thaw hits.

What is "Polymeric Sand," and why do I need it for my patio?

Polymeric sand is a high-tech mix of graded sand and binders. Once we sweep it into your patio joints and mist it with water, it hardens to act like a flexible mortar. In Ontario, this is essential because it prevents weeds from growing between your pavers, stops ants from mining out the base, and—most importantly—resists being washed away by our heavy spring rains.
